Landlords encouraged to roll out home automation

A technology expert has said that home automation offers many advantages to an existing property.

Engineer Andy Stanford-Clark, a visiting professor at the University of Newcastle, said that home automation is about having infrastructure in place.

This will result in the creation of a “home hub”, he explained, which can then be added to as and when owners wish.

“So, you start off with something, like the energy monitoring, and then you build it out as new things occur to you or as more things become available to you,” Mr Stanford-Clark added.

“It can possibly be linked into the set top box or part of a smart meter, or the phone answering machine – there are lots of things that can potentially be built into it.”

Recent analysis from ABI Research revealed that home automation technologies can help landlords reduce power usage in their properties.

In addition, the report said that revenue from the systems is likely to exceed £7.77 billion over the next five years.
